Inherited Urbanism | 2016

Inherited Urbanism | 2016
Collaborators: Srishti Institute of Art Design & Technology & Team YUVAA
Place: Walled city, Bidar
Timeline: July - November 2016

Next wave of urbanization in India is in the smaller cities and towns. Many of these smaller urban conglomerates have retained tangible and intangible legacies from their pasts. This is an important asset to the communities and governments alike allowing these cities to mark their distinctiveness, attract tourists and inward investment and reimagine a historical urban narrative that feeds into the quality of life. ‘Inherited Urbanism’ (project) is set in this context to understand people, practices and the opportunities it offers to navigate through on-going urbanization. Our inquiry is in the walled city of Bidar, where the historic wall shares an interface with the built and socio-cultural urban quality of the present. It is amidst these ancient infrastructures, cultural markers and a diverse ecological setting the residents - the inheritors of Bidar - carry out their everyday practices. These associative values in the historic parts of Bidar are less understood.
